WHAT ARE THE KIDNEY STONES

The urolithiasis, the scientific term for what we commonly call kidney stones, it’s a diffused pathology: it’s estimated that in Italy it affects the 15-20% of population, with differences between regions and sex (higher occurrence in the male than in the female population).

The cause of kidney stones formation is, in some cases, still partially unknown: however it’s supposed that some salts, normally presents in urine, because of an excessive concentration, originates renal stones.

About the 80% of stones contains calcium: others components may be organic substances such as uric acid and cystine. In about the 10% of cases the kidney stones composition results being constructed by the association of the substances just cited.
